Remote work is growing fast in Aotearoa. Kiwis want options beyond working from home. Students, both local and international, need reliable places to study. Travellers expect the same laptop-friendly culture they find overseas.
But in New Zealand, expectations aren’t always clear.
Some cafés love laptop patrons and design their spaces around them. Others don't — and that's totally fine. The issue is: nobody knows which is which.
That’s where NZ Remote comes in.
What We're Building
A simple, community-driven map of places where laptops are welcome, from cafés and coworking spaces to libraries, airports and public spots across the motu.
If a business welcomes laptop users, we'll proudly feature them on our community map.
If they don't — ka pai. Just let us know and we'll make sure you're not listed or removed. Letting us know is just as helpful as adding places to the map.
Our goal is to:
- help remote workers find the right spaces
- support students looking for study-friendly spots
- help businesses attract the customers they actually want
- reduce friction and misunderstandings
- showcase NZ as a remote-work-friendly nation
- attract high-value remote visitors who stay longer, spend more, and support local communities

Meet the Founder
NZ Remote is a passion project by Kiwi indie founder and digital nomad Michael Watson, who also created StudySpy, New Zealand's course and scholarship directory. Michael's spent the past four years travelling and working remotely around the world, proudly promoting New Zealand as a study destination — and now as a remote-work destination too. NZ Remote is a self-built, independent platform made with a lot of care for the people who use it and for the businesses it represents.
