Building the future of flexible work and study in New Zealand.

Kia ora!

We believe New Zealand can become the best place in the world for remote work and study.

Every day, remote workers, students and travellers are looking for places where they can open a laptop and feel welcome. At the same time, businesses deserve to set and communicate their own expectations, whether they welcome laptop users or prefer a different atmosphere.

That's why we built NZ Remote: to reduce friction and misunderstandings. We're creating a simple, community-driven map of places where laptop users are genuinely welcome, helping people find the right space with confidence while growing New Zealand's remote work and study community.

Why it matters

☕ Less Friction

We help remote workers, students and visitors find places where they’re welcome, while helping businesses communicate their expectations and guidelines around remote working.

🎓 Access to Opportunity

Great work and learning both depend on having somewhere to be productive. We’re making welcoming, laptop-friendly places easier to discover.

🥝 Helping New Zealand Thrive

We boost productivity and support regional economies by making it easier to work and study across NZ, encouraging tourists to stay longer, spend locally and travel regionally.

Why NZ Remote Exists

Remote work is growing fast in Aotearoa. Kiwis want options beyond working from home. Students, both local and international, need reliable places to study. Travellers expect the same laptop-friendly culture they find overseas.

But in New Zealand, expectations aren’t always clear. Some cafés love laptop patrons and design their spaces around them. Others don’t, and that’s totally fine. The problem is: nobody knows which is which. That’s where NZ Remote comes in.

What We’re Building

A simple, community-driven map of places where laptops are welcome, from cafés and coworking spaces to libraries, airports and public spots across the motu, while growing a community of people passionate about remote work and study across Aotearoa. If a place welcomes laptop users, we’ll proudly feature them on our community map.

If they don’t, ka pai. Just let us know. We’d much rather have an accurate map than a bigger one, so your feedback is just as valuable as adding new places. Every suggestion helps make NZ Remote better for everyone.

Have an idea for NZ Remote? We’d love to hear it on our public feedback board.

Meet the Founder

Portrait of Michael Watson, founder of NZ Remote

NZ Remote was created by Kiwi indie founder Michael Watson, who also built StudySpy, New Zealand's course and scholarship directory. Through years helping students discover education opportunities and four years working remotely around the world, the idea for NZ Remote was simple: make it easier for remote workers and students to discover welcoming, laptop-friendly places across Aotearoa.

NZ Remote is an independent platform helping make New Zealand one of the best places in the world for remote work and study.

If you'd like to connect, feel free to add me on LinkedIn. If you'd like to support NZ Remote, the best way is to add places, review listings, or share ideas to help make the platform even better.
